Interior

The font is in the style of the 14th century but an inscription shows that it was made in 1661 when Richard Ingles and Charles Agge were churchwardens. Photograph kindly loaned by Mr Michael Casey

Church Bells

There are six bells with the following inscriptions -

1.  Peace and good neighbourhood 1729
2.  Prosperity to this Parish 1729
3.  Prosperity to the Church of England 1729
4.  A B R Rudhall cast us all 1729
5.  Rich'd Tyso and John Andrews Churchwardens 1729
6.  I to the church the living call and to the grave do summon all 1729

 

Memorials

The Percy Memorial

This is the earliest surviving memorial in the church.  It commemorates Sir Charles Percy and his wife, Dorothy Cocks (see Cocks Family page).   Dorothy was previously married to the squire Edmund Hutchins. Sir Charles was a son of the Earl of Northumberland and in 1603 he carried the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth I to James VI in Scotland.  The text of the memorial is -

HERE LYE THE BODIES OF SR CHARLES PERCYE, KNIGHT AND SONNE OF
THE EARLE OF NORTHUMBERLAND AND OF DAME DOROTHY HIS WIFE, THE
DAUGHTER OF THOMAS COCKS OF CLEEVE ESQ, AND OF ANNE THEIR DAUGHTER.
SR CHARLES WAS BURIED THE 9TH DAY OF JULY ANO DONI 1628
DAME DOROTHY THE 28TH OF JUNE ANO DONI 1646

 

Memorial to Charles Cocks who died in 1654   

 

Memorial to Sir Robert Cocks
He inherited the Dumbleton Estate from his brother Richard, High Sheriff of Gloucestershire.


The text of the memorial reads as follows -

 

In memory of Sir Robert Cocks Bart
who after fuftaining with Chriftian firtitude
and refignation the moft Affecting Lofs of
an Amiable wife and three Children in
the Courfe of a few days by a Cruel
Diftemper which Attaked his Family
had the Miffortune to loofe his own
Life by a fall from his horfe in April
1765 and lies Buried near this place

Memorial to Edward Holland

Edward Holland commisioned the architect G S Repton to build the new Dumbleton Hall in 1830.   He was a founder of the Royal Agricultural College at Cirencester, and was a cousin of the novelist Mrs Gaskell.   Edward Holland's eldest son married Mrs Gaskell's daughter.

The lower memorial remembers his granddaughter Agnes, the daughter of his eldest son Thurston

Memorial to Frances Ryan

 

 

Frances Ryan was one of Edward Holland's 14 children

The memorial reads as follows -

In Memory of FRANCES MARGARET,
Daughter of EDWARD HOLLAND of Dumbleton
and wife of Major W C B Ryan.
Born March 25th 1846.    Died at Lucknow, November 25th 1874

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God

Memorial to Gino Watkins

 

 

Henry George "Gino" Watkins was the son of the first Lord Monsall's sister Jennie.   He visited Dumbleton Hall on numerous occasions. He was a renowned mountaineer and arctic explorer but was tragically killed in a kayak accident in Greenland in 1932 when only 25 years old.

He led an expedition to Spitzbergen in 1927 and also the British Arctic Air Route expedition in 1930-32.

He was a holder of :

The Polar Medal,  The Hans Egede Medal of Denmark,
The Founders Medal of The Royal Geographical Society,  and
The Bruce Medal of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
